Lumi Crew was founded at Arteles residency in Haukijärvi, Finland, a remote community with minimal social interaction. Based on the premise of performance & dance, Lumi Crew wanted to bring art to the community in a fun, accessible way. The inaugural performance took place at a popular supermarket that linked two country villages together. People who otherwise might not see art and/or the members of their community regularly, could interact and enjoy performance art while they shopped and carried out regular tasks for the day. The aim of the project is to explore personal identities within the context of dance and to bring performance art to remote communities that might in turn, bolster social networks. We are addressing social needs through the umbrella of fine art, using it as a tool to speak to people in unique ways. . Each piece is choreographed with the specific communities in mind.
